in jazz music, for one player to interrupt the beginning of another players improvised solo by commencing their own improvised solo. variations include the “standing craunch” where in a big band, the saxophone player stands up to take a solo, and is left looking foolish as one of the br-ss section standing behind him has commenced a solo. also, the “flying craunch” where a solo that has begun tastefully, with only a few sp-rs- notes is interrupted by another play who plays high and/or loud and/or fast.
i got craunched three times tonight, and all of those where by the trumpet player.
