cryptarithm
a math puzzle in which letters or symbols stand for digits—its solution requires a knowledge of the basic properties of numbers and some guess and check—which can serve as an ideal pastime for prisoners to keep themselves sane.
if the letters in a cryptarithm form sensible words or phrases, the puzzle is known as an alphametic.
