an ashken-z-c jewish and slavic surname, “czernikowski” (pr-nounced “t’sh-er-nee-kov-skee”) is a name related to “black” (“czarny” or “czarna”) or a place name (e.g., “czarnia” for the czarna or czarnia river in northeastern poland).
