Exercise cardiac treadmill
Exercise cardiac treadmill: A machine used to obtain a continuous electrocardiogram (EKG, ECG) recording of the heart as a patient performs increasing levels of exercise. An exercise cardiac treadmill permits the detection of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and provides a screening test for the presence of narrowed arteries of the heart (coronary arteries). Narrowing of these arteries can limit the supply of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle during exercise.

- Exercise, aerobic
Brisk exercise that promotes the circulation of oxygen through the blood and is associated with an increased rate of breathing. Examples include running, swimming, and bicycling.
- Exercise, isometric
Exercise, isometric: Exercise involving muscular contractions without movement of the involved parts of the body. Isometric exercise is one method of muscular exercise. In contrast, isotonic exercise occurs when a contracting muscle shortens against a constant load, as when lifting a weight. Isometric comes from the Greek “iso-“, equal + “metron”, measure = maintaining the […]

Exercise, passive: Movement of the body, usually of the limbs, without effort by the patient. The patient is passive.
- Exercise-induced asthma
Asthma triggered by vigorous physical activity. It primarily affects children and young adults because of their high levels of physical activity, but it can occur at any age. Exercise-induced asthma is initiated by the fall in airway temperature during rapid breathing followed by rapid reheating with lowered ventilation. The more heat that is transferred, the […]
