a compound produced by bacteria in the stomach that appears to correlate with risk of heart disease, according to preliminary studies. TMAO is produced in the body from egg yolks and red meat. Researchers believe that it affects the body’s metabolism of cholesterol, leading to enhanced development of plaque on blood vessel walls, and can increase risk of heart disease. Studies showed that people with high TMAO levels had higher risk for heart attack, heart disease, and stroke. Consumption of a heart-healthy diet has been shown to reduce TMAO levels.
