gentoo

watching sh-t scroll by for hours makes me a linux expert overnight!
i like gentoo and hondas.
a gnu/linux distribution that isn’t as easy to install as red hat-based distributions, but is very stable. you have to build it from source. it’s worth it, though, as it builds into your system.
it takes three commands to install gentoo.

# cfdisk /dev/hda && mkfs.xfs /dev/hda1 && mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/gentoo/ && chroot /mnt/gentoo/ && env-update && . /etc/profile && emerge sync && cd /usr/portage && scripts/bootsrap.sh && emerge system && emerge vim && vi /etc/fstab && emerge gentoo-dev-sources && cd /usr/src/linux && make menuconfig && make install modules_install && emerge gnome mozilla-firefox openoffice && emerge grub && cp /boot/grub/grub.conf.sample /boot/grub/grub.conf && vi /boot/grub/grub.conf && grub && init 6

that’s the first one.
the favourited distrobution of linux that i’ve found among my favourite linux geeks. supposed to be a bit less newbie-friendly than mandrake, but meh. it has a really nice installation guide and faq.. about 40 pages all together. i’ve never seen anything like that with other distros.

also a small fast penguin or something.
gentoo has a lot of doc-mentation, man. that’s a very good thing. all my linux-geek friends like it.
a fast-growing distro of linux, geared towards optimisation and people who like to tinker than other distros. it’s straight forward to install if you rtfm, but still takes ages as it compiles everything from source code, so that it is faster and more optimised for your system.
the debian user generalised all gentoo users as elitist pr-cks, when, ironically, he was being the pr-ck.

(i’m not generalising- this is a hypothetical character.)
the linux distro. the absolute best one there is. it’s actually not as hard to install as you might think. they have an awesome installation guide, follow it exactly, and you’re as good as gold, furthermore you compile your own kernel, if done right, all your hardware is supported 100%. if your software isn’t listed in the gentoo repo, install layman to get unsupported packages. one of the best things about gentoo, is that your software is always up to date, you compile the very latest version yourself, you will never be behind the times. also due to the awesomeness of use flags, you can compile your software just the way you want it to compile. there is no limit to what you can do, if you use gentoo!
gentoo, the linux distro.
a totally awesome linux distro
