grubenschnitzel ist a pseudo-german word invented by americans, because they thought this combination of words sounded funny and every american knows what ‘schnitzel’ means. literally translated it would mean something like ‘pit cutlet’ which makes no sense whatsoever. it has no meaning in germany. it is unknown when this word started to become a fad.
