ignominiac
a term based on ignominy and maniac.
this is a person who is intent on being a noted authority of discoverer by the use of such things as selective plagiarism, rampant falsification or just plain ignorance. when this results in public shame and disgrace, an ignominiac will persist nonetheless and may ultimately become a glorious antihero to some.
the term could also be used for a rumor monger – well-known or otherwise.
an historical example of an ignominiac is willard glazier who (in the 1880s) visited the area of the upper mississippi river in minnesota and came up with his falsified proof of the actual ultimate source of the river which he named after himself. eventually the minnesota legislature ordered schools to not teach his findings as fact.
