an anti-war book written by dalton trumbo sometime in the 1940s and also a movie made in the 70s. joe donham is a young man who is drafted into a war based on democracy. he survives the explosion of a mine which ultimately leaves joe lifeless; he is blind, deaf, and without limbs. his caretakers and doctors do not think he is capable of feeling pain, dreaming, or thinking, all which he goes through. these are some of his thoughts:

“how can you tell what’s a dream and what’s real if you can’t even tell when you’re awake and when you’re asleep?”
