jungle primary
in politics, a jungle primary is the reaction to the other side running a “scripted primary” in which the opposing party elite turns their primary into a coronation, ignoring the rank and file.
a jungle primary is the exact opposite:
— everyone in the political party (and some outsiders)with enough of a following who is willing to agree with the party’s platform is welcome to partic-p-te. the party elite listen to the rank and file.
— a large number of candidates are fielded for the initial stages of the primary. these candidates are encouraged to go head-to-head in a number of debates with minimal rules of engagement. “the law of the jungle” (“only the strong survive”) prevails. this pits ingenuity against ingenuity and deal-making against deal-making; politics become the ultimate social darwinism.
— when the battling is over, there is normally only one survivor with enough popular support and the party not in power has a very aggressive and populist candidate. this works best in elections where there is a large “monkey factor” against the inc-mbent.
— properly done, this is the equivalent of pitting a well-trained inc-mbent boxer with gloves against a fully-armed hungry leopard with teeth and claws. we know what the results will be. the only question is whether the leopard will stick to the original message….
hillary clinton was defeated by a republican jungle primary coupled with the monkey factor.
