stemming from the famously liberal and famously “catholic” kennedy family.a kennedy catholic is an individual who belongs to the roman catholic church but observes the religion’s practices as a cultural tradition rather than a spiritual exercise. kennedy catholics may not fully understand the theology that informs the religion’s rituals, or may reject part or most of the theology. it is a term generally synonymous with cafeteria catholic

mary catherine: he seems nice but when we got onto the subject of our catholic faith he said that it’s more of tradition to him that an actual faith. he’s more of a kennedy catholic.
