when the sweep of immigrants from italy, hungary, germany and many other european nations h-t canada, a lot of the men would go work on construction sites. they would work side-by-side with the well-established first, second and third generation irish, scottish and other non-european canadians. at lunch, the europeans would take out the big honkin’ sandwiches their mothers or wives made for them, while their non-european counterparts took out their biscuits, m-ffins and little cakes. therein followed lots of laughs and jests in foreign languages, and ‘mangicake’ was born: he who eats cake.
“he eats, but it’s only cake”. (emphasis on ‘eat’ spoken in italian, and ‘cake’ spoken in english).
(in italian): “look at the mangicake, his wife sends him to work hungry! we should share our meals with him and make him strong!”
