money for old rope

money for old rope

a old saying that means getting money for nothing or doing nothing.

it originates from a time when hangmen used to get to keep the rope from the condemned as a perk of the job and unscrupulous hangmen would just keep the rope and then sell pieces of old rope to gullible souvenir hunters at hangings instead.
i cant believe he was paid to sit around watching tv talk about money for old rope!
