(short for n-gg-r university) is a term meaning a jail, prison, or penitentiary to which a black person, typically a young male, is sent after being convicted of criminal activity. the -ssociation with an inst-tute of higher learning is a social commentary on how young black males in america are much more likely to serve time in prison than to graduate from a 4-year college. the constant stream of african american males into the nation’s prison system led some wagsters to comment that jail has become a de-facto “university” for these convicts, providing them with room, board, and, yes, even a little education. the relative paucity of black youth in legitiamate american colleges, especially the elite inst-tutions, has led people to conclude that blacks have a reverse value system in which prison is more prestigious than school.
