niraya

(sanskrit: नरक; pali: निरय niraya) a term in buddhist cosmology usually referred to in english as “h-ll” (or “h-ll realm”) or “purgatory”. the narakas of buddhism are closely related to diyu, the h-ll in chinese mythology.
“devadatta had slaughtered a swan or an elephant. so it was buddha who had save it. his evil cousin attacks him with boulders so he could die. but he survived because the boulders became flowers and a rolling of rose petals. so then he sent a drunk elephant named nalagiri but failed to attack him. a day later he was taken to avici niraya for his sins.”
