Oxymaroons
the nickname of university of chicago sports teams. it is a reference to “university of chicago athletics” being an oxymoron.
maroon and maroons became the university of chicago’s official color and nickname, respectively, at a meeting of students and faculty on may 5, 1894.
the oxymaroons have been living up to their name lately, unfortunately. it’s nothing like the good old days with the maroons who won the big 10 in football in 1899, 1905-, 1907, 1908, 1913, 1922, and 1924.
