psychathlete
someone whose partic-p-tion in a sport is largely a result of low self-esteem. perceived success in that sport helps compensate for feelings of inadequacy.
think of the numerous triathletes and “adventure racers” who are still sore about getting cut from some sports team in highs school. these are psychathlete types.
