raggam-ffin (or ragga) is a kind of reggae rap that includes digitized backing instrumentation. it is a form of dancehall, and has been popular since the middle of the 1980s; “(under me) sleng teng” (wayne smith; 1985) is usually recognized as the first ragga song. the instrumentation is usually behind dub singing, which is similar to rapping in its focus on rhythmic, -ssonating and rhyming words.

ragga is the short form of raggam-ffin, a term which held its present musical connotations since the late 1980s or beginning of 1990s. the term raggam-ffin is derived from the middle english personal name “ragam-ffyn”, which was usually employed in an insulting manner towards street children. the word later came to mean a person who is shabbily clothed and dirty, often applied to orphans. it was used in this way to describe kingston ghetto youth, and the youth themselves took on the term to describe their new music.
the name was used early on in alb-m t-tles by asher d & daddy freddy – “raggam-ffin hip-hop” as well as the daddy freddy songs “ragga house” with simon harris or “ragga rock” with led zeppelin.

apache indian is the stage name of reggae dee jay steven kapur. he introduced bhangra raggam-ffin also known as bhangram-ffin – to the world with his first alb-m “no reservations” , which featured rapper tim dog and sp-wned the m-ssive hit “boomshackalak”.

apache indian merged raggam-ffin with indian music as well as influences from mainstream pop and hip-hop. born in handsworth, birmingham, england, apache indian started a trend that has found a huge following.
he is the only asian to date to have seven top 40 hits on the mainstream british charts. stylistically, apache indian moved from mixing indian music with raggam-ffin and hip hop to more traditional forms of reggae on his most recent alb-m, “karma”.apache indian has recorded with boyz ii men, blackstreet, wreckx ‘n’ effect, ub40, us chart topper sean paul, maxi priest, general levy, brian and tony gold, sh-ggy, yami bolo, boy george, a.r. rahman, sameera singh. asha bhosle and pras of the fugees.
