rap = the mechanism through which lyrics are delivered. i.e., a rapper composes more of the lyrical elements of a song.

hip hop = a movement, moreso the entire composition of a song, including the lyrics, melody, beat, harmonics, singing. i.e., a hip hop artist composes more of then entirety of a song – lyrics, melody, singing, message.
