reign in blood’s release was delayed because of concerns regarding its lyrical subject matter and graphic artwork: several catholic popes drowning in a river of blood in h-ll; satan on his throne; etc.

the opening track, “angel of death”, references josef mengele and details acts committed at the auschwitz concentration camp, which provoked allegations of n-z-sm. slayer takes no pro or con position on the matter in the song.

the alb-m was slayer’s first to enter the billboard 200; the release peaked at number 94, and in 1992 was awarded a gold certification by the recording industry -ssociation of america.

kerrang! magazine described it as the “heaviest alb-m of all time” while metal hammer magazine named it “the best metal alb-m of the last 20 years”.

inexplicably the ultra-mainstream spin magazine ranked the alb-m number 67 on their list of the “100 greatest alb-ms, 1985-2005.”

often regarded as thrash metal band slayer’s best work, and sometimes even called the best/heaviest/most brutal/fastest alb-m of all time, reign in blood is a highly overrated slayer alb-m. slayer’s first two alb-ms, show no mercy and h-ll awaits both surp-ss reign in blood greatly. also, kreator’s second alb-m, pleasure to kill, released in the same year as reign in blood, is much heavier and more brutal (and in my opinion, better) than reign in blood could ever hope to be.
