scarecasting


similar to weather forecasting, but either a news source (company or individual) twists the forecast of a severe storm into a worst case scenario. this usually occurs well before a storm forecast has been solidly determined.
person 1: the weather forecast on the news is saying hurricane irma is the next harvey, and it’s going to hit charleston, sc.

person 2: irma is still a week away from landfall. it sounds like they’re scarecasting. don’t believe everything you hear.
