schnitting


archaeological term used to describe the art of removing dirt from a square hole with a square shovel. if schnitting is done correctly, a large amount of dirt can be removed from a location with unbelievable precision. the material or “schnitt” that is removed can then be sifted using a fine screen. this screen will remove the schnitt from the artifacts – which may include, pot sherds and even coprolite (petrified sh-t)
