the best icelandic band ever. half of the people will find them boring, while the other half will believe in god after listening to their music.

it is a popular girls name in that region
these guys like playing guitar with a bow. a lot. the music is actually very sophisticated and atmospheric. a lot of people call them “ambient pop” but that’s a misnomer. “ambient” implies a lack of movement; in fact, sigur ros’ music grows and moves more in the course of one track than most contemporary music does over the course of an entire alb-m. definitely worth a listen. pick up agaetis byrjun first.

an icelandic rock band. most of the music is very smooth and contains electronic music components. its pr-nounced “see-yor roce”
sigur ros is very relaxing yet energizing.
band formed in august 1994 in iceland, their name was taken from jónsi’s (one of the band members) younger sister sigurrós, who was born the same day as the band was formed.
current members are: “jónsi” birgisson, “goggi” hólm, “kjarri” sveinsson, and orri páll dýrason.
genre is considered to be post-rock.

facts:

the cd “ágætis byrjun” (an alright start) got this band on their way to fame over the next two years, from word of mouth.
the follow up alb-m, ( ) (referred to as “unt-tled”), was a major hit. it is said that the listener is supposed to listen to each song and interpret their own meaning of the lyrics, then write them on the blank pages of the alb-m booklet.
unt-tled #4 (njósnavélin) appeared in the film vanilla sky; other music by them has also appeared in the hit television series 24.
the band first became well known from the unique way birgisson played his guitar, with a bow from a cello, to create a sound that is unique for an electric guitar.

overall, a great band. none of the lyrics are in english…but i believe that makes every song even better, its like the voice becomes an instrument in the music.
sigur ros is my favorite band.
one of the best and most beautiful musical groups in the history of human civilization. though others here have described it as “rock,” this description would be selling it short. sigur ros is really a mix of postmodernism and cl-ssical music with singing and the occasional guitar thrown in. in fact, sigur ros is almost it’s own genre of music, as there is truly nothing else like it (though bands such as radiohead have been influenced by it).

agaetis byrjun is their second and best alb-m, and it incorporates the widest range of styles and ideas, though their other alb-ms are great as well. all of their music is sung in icelandic (except for their song “all alright,” which is obviously in english and () which was sung in a made up language called “hopelandic”) yet it is still more enjoyable than a good chunk of music sung in english.

unfortunately, sigur ros is currently on hiatus, though jonsi has released some solo music, so it’s not all bad.
i cringe whenever itunes describes sigur ros’s music as alternative/punk.
