stare decisis
a system of binding precedent whereby the legal reasoning used to reach a decision in one case shall be followed in subsequent cases which require similar legal considerations to be made.
it only exists in common law, not codified, legal systems.
where one judge follows the decision in a previous case is an example of stare decisis being applied.
