1930s anti-lynching poem written by meeropol, put to music and made famous by billie holiday. provides possible basis for the name of hip hop group “strange fruit project.
“southern trees bear a “strange fruit”
blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
black body swinging in the southern breeze,
strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.”
