noun – a libel lawsuit based on a twitter account public posting. was frequently used with courtney love being sued for a “tweet” that was considered disparaging. may be seen as the first step of twitter, and other social media platforms, as a legitimate news source with first amendment implications/protections.
courtney love being sued for a 2010 twitter post regarding her attorney. “twibel” was coined by concatenating twitter + libel. the term was used in reports by various sources including abc news, the huffington post, media bistro, and the american bar -ssociation journal. a jury found in favor of ms. love in january 2014 (i.e., cleared).
