GUBU
expression coined by taoiseach (pr-nounced roughly thee-shock, prime minister of ireland) charles haughey, meaning grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented, in 1982. referred to an incident in which malcolm macarthur, a dublin socialite who had murdered both a nurse in the phoenix park and a man who sold him a gun in edenderry, county offaly, was found in hiding in the home of the then attorney general in sandycove, county dublin. since then used in irish political culture to describe any sufficiently notorious scandal, as well as being used for the name of a gay bar in dublin.
he swindled five billion euro out of the public coffers and even after it was blown wide open, they elected him again. talk about gubu.
