origin: probably sp-wned from the days when thieves had one of their digits forcibly removed after being caught stealing.
used in the phrase “you nine-fingered sh-tehawk-!” in reference to a car salesman after he sweet talks you out of your hard earned cash for a car that is hardly worth the elastic in your underwear.
