early usage of the term pomo dates from 1991 when pomo afro h-m-, an african american gay theatrical collective, premiered “fierce love” at josie’s in san francisco’s castro district. “pomo” is short for post-modern, plus “afro” plus “h-m-” was about as avant guard as you could get in those dark days. “fierce love” was a seminal play during the height of the aids epidemic and it dramatised a number of issues about masculinity and s-xuality that were very difficult in the community at the time. important derivation.
